Helping patients get some shut eye with the help of AI

A team from Feinstein Institute of Research thinks that AI can be a major key in helping patients with their rest schedules.

Almost 95% of patients are actually disturbed during those few moments of sleep just because the nurse had to come in at “that moment” to take their vitals. And it’s not just the patients – even nurses have a hard time coping up with sleep due to the fact that they have a patient’s vitals to check at 3 am in the morning.

“Rest is a critical element to a patient’s care, and it has been well-documented that disrupted sleep is a common complaint that could delay discharge and recovery,”

Theodoros Zanos, Assistant Professor at Feinstein Institutes’ Institute of Bioelectronic Medicine.

In a paper published by Nature Partner Journals, researchers go into detail about a deep learning predictive tool can help with the patient’s stability overnight, thereby preventing unwanted checks being carried out.

At Northwell Hospitals, this is something that is taken into practice. From 2013 to 2019, they trained an AI to take the basics of a patients vitals – such as heart rate, systolic blood pressure,  body temperature, respiratory rate, and age. However, the machine did misdiagnose 10,000 patients in overnight stays, which is something that they are improving on.

With time, this can be a technology that can be inhibited into the AI and it would reduce nurse workloads a lot easier.
